Close Encounters

I met one of my heroes today.  Remember my blog post 3...2...1...Launch when I told you how Chris Hadfield's book "An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth" changed my life?  Well today, I got to tell HIM how it changed my life  :)

Last week I was at Costco to pick up a prescription, and saw a poster on the wall "Chris Hadfield book signing, Saturday November 29 12 - 2pm" I actually squeeeed right there in Costco :)  I bought his new book "You Are Here", which is a compilation of some of the photos he took from the International Space Station.  There are some quite amazing photos, and I'm fairly certain not too many people will ever be able to see the world from that vantage point, so this is the closest we're going to get to see Earth from space!

I had a massage appointment this morning first thing, so I arrived at Costco shortly before 11am figuring the line would be out the door already, but I hoped maybe not too many people had heard about his book signing.  Turns out, he arrived 2 hours early! because he's that awesome, and he was already signing books, shaking hands, and allowing photographs.  Yes folks, he's an astronaut, he's a rock star, and he's an all around nice guy to boot!

I really didn't have to wait in line for very long at all, everyone was being so polite and swift and rather overly Canadian ;) giving everyone a chance to see him.  Costco employees were marveling at how many people there were in line.  I mean really?  How could they not know he'd be popular!?

When I got my chance to see him, one assistant handed him my books, another took my phone from me to take photos, and he smiled quickly at me and started signing.  Then I said "I have to tell you that that book right there changed my life!"  He stopped and looked up at me, and kind of looked surprised.  He answered "Wow, thank you for telling me that.  It was hard to write, I'm glad it changed your life"  So I went on "I felt like a big fat loser, and it inspired me to change that.  Now I'm studying to be a Health Coach and I'm going to change a thousand more lives!"  He seemed surprised somehow that he's such an inspiration.  Again with the genuinely overall nice guy!  I managed to not burst into tears, just barely!  He shook my hand 3 times, said "thank you for telling me that" a few times, and he smiled a lot, and I really wish I could have stayed to talk to him for the rest of the day.  But being the polite Canadian that I am, I thanked him, took my books and my phone, and walked away with a bit of a spring in my step, feeling like I'd somehow touched the moon.  :)
