I had initially intended to only do a short hike in, about 2 or 2 ½ hours, because of the heat. The temperature forecast for Saturday was to be quite a bit cooler and less humid, so I figured I’d do the long end of the loop on Saturday morning, rather than on my way in Friday afternoon (after an almost 5 hour drive up there, that should have taken only 3 hours, because of highway closures for an accident overnight!). I started on my way at 1:30 in the afternoon, and figured I’d be at my campsite (number 530) by 4:00 at the latest. Easy peasy, set up the tent, make some dinner, sit and relax and enjoy the view before bedtime. WELL! Not so much. I missed a left turn, and took the right fork in the trail instead, and ended up on the longer end of the loop, so I was out there for quite a lot longer than I had planned. Read More

I'm a Superstar!

I went to spin class Friday afternoon with friend Jenn, and even though I hadn't had much sleep the night before (yet another family member taken to hospital and released in the wee small hours, keeping me awake most of the night whilst I sat at my sister's house with her kids...everyone's ok...no worries). But I went to class because I have to train for the Spin4Kids and I didn't want to let my team down by not being able to complete a full program. And then after spin class, we went to a yoga class, which was strangely difficult! I thought yoga was supposed to be easy stretching and stuff! Wow, she made us work for it, and the room awas all hot, having been warmed up by the spin class right beforehand! But I did it, and I felt like a superstar when I walked out of there. Even if my legs were a little jelly like ;) Read More

Confessions of an Autoimmune Collector

About 3 or 4 years or so ago, I was having a heckuva time with extreme exhaustion, chronic vertigo, scatter brain (one step up [down?] from the usual autoimmune brain fog), systemic inflammation and pain, and just general overall bad health that the doctors could find no reason for at all. I lost my job because of it. Of course given that I already had 3 diagnosed autoimmune diseases I kept telling them it was probably another one. Or maybe even two or more! They ran tests, and they kept telling me results were "inconclusive". One rheumatologist said to "come back when you have more or worse symptoms" and a neurologist told me I probably need a psychiatrist, because he couldn't find anything wrong with me. Read More

The Long and Winding Road

When I got the diagnosis of Grave's I had no idea what the heck it was, or what an autoimmune disease is, how one gets such a thing, or what to do with it once you get it! I was given a prescription for Methimazole and told to come in for regular blood work. Unfortunately my employer had a different idea and wouldn't let me take time off for my first appointment, so I ended up going hyPO thyroid, and felt even more like crap! Plus I gained 20 pounds in a month. (it's very important to keep doctor appointments! don't work for an employer who won't let you take time out for doctor appointments!...yeah, I quit that job...). We managed to get my thyroid levels back on track though, and after 18 months the Grave's disease went into remission. Read More
