How many balls can I juggle?

Amongst all of this flurry of activity, I still have a full-time day job, plus need to take time out for “me”, otherwise I get stressed out and get a flare up of something, which will then set me back, unable to do much of anything. Just as anyone with autoimmune disease can attest, stress and overwork really doesn’t do us any good at all. For each of us, our first priority should be self care, yes, even if you have kids! Otherwise we’re no good to anyone. Read More

Ta Da!

Whether you have an autoimmune disease, or other chronic disease like fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, type 2 diabetes, the paleo Autoimmune protocol lifestyle can most certainly help! Remember, the elimination phase is temporary! It's not forever! So it's really not as scary as it may sound. Read More

Books and things

My latest newsletter included an exclusive sneak peek at a new cookie recipe I created. It is AIP and vegan, and is ready for fall and the start of holiday season! OMG, did I just say that? EEK! If you’re not on my newsletter subscription list, then you missed out on the recipe, but it’ll be posted on my website in a few weeks, after subscribers have it all to themselves for a while. If you’d like the recipe, you can subscribe now, and I’ll send it out to you. Read More

AIP and the Canada Food Guide

I’ve been reading a lot lately about the re-jig of the Canada Food Guide that is coming up for next year. From what I’ve read, I still think it sucks! At first glance, it seems like it would be ok, that is, until you start to learn more about nutrition, and the science of what food actually does to your body when you eat it. Then we run into some problems with their suggestions! Read More

Surviving Hours on Your Feet

I know a lot of people think that paleo and AIP are too restrictive. That there’s nothing to eat. That they’ll starve. That they don’t know what to eat. But there is LOTS to eat! So much to eat! I wasn’t the least bit hungry at all, not even when I got home at 2am. But really, everything that I took with me, except possibly the dulse, are fairly standard fare snack foods. Read More

Flavour Cravings

Yesterday, I don’t know where it came from, but suddenly I had a whiff of gingersnap cookies up my nose, and I was immediately returned to my childhood, dunking gingersnaps in my tea. Or “Dad’s” oatmeal chocolate chip, or regular chocolate chip. All of them, and a cup of tea, was the perfect afternoon snack. I don’t know where the smell came from, I was nowhere near the cookie plant, (we used to live close to it when I was a kid…still driving by in the summer time when you can smell all the cookies makes me want to eat them all!). But ever since, I’ve been craving gingersnap cookies Read More

Happy Holidays!

The holidays can be a trying time for those of us with celiac disease, or food allergies and intolerances. Avoiding gluten this time of year is tricky, to say the least! I have spent the last week and a half or so watching everybody at work munching on some of my old favourites of the season; gingerbread, shortbread, pannetone, sugar cookies, squares of all sorts, and cakes of all kinds. It’s been non-stop junk food in the office, and not a single bite of it can I eat. Yes, it’s tricky. But I know if I indulge in any of it, I’ll be sick for weeks. In pain, constipated, bloated, foggy brained, migraines, and etc… So what do I do? How do I avoid all the crap that I can’t eat? Well it’s simple really. I just don’t eat it. It’s not willpower. It’s life. Read More

I Got Glutened!

I was "glutened" yesterday. I had some paleo porridge for breakfast with some coconut flour bought at the Bulk Barn, and pretty much immediately afterward felt the pain starting. I still had to go to work though. The pain got progressively worse through the day, and I still had to go grocery shopping! I stopped at the health food store and got some magnesium citrate powder to help with the pain and constipation that always comes with a glutening. Read More

Yep, I'm Crazy!

Recently I went and got some x-rays of my spine, top to bottom. I've had difficulties with back pain pretty much since my early 20s, after my first emergency surgery that opened up my lower abdomen, zipper style, belly button on down. 2 more similar surgeries, and 20 plus years of sitting working hunched over a computer keyboard, and no one to tell me how to avoid this problem, and now my spine is not in such good health.
